The Affirm laser, by Cynosure is a non-ablative fractional laser treatment that works to soften or eliminate acne scars, wrinkles, microthermal skin resurfacing, stretch marks and traumatic scars. Using 1440 nm of laser light, the Affirm works by treating the skin in a dot mosaic pattern, leaving a portion of the epidermal tissue intact. Fractional treating of the skin, works to the patients advantage, as injuring only a portion of skin initiates faster healing time. The thermal injury created does not penetrate into the deep dermis therefore the recovery period is lessened considerably. The heat not only initiates the rejuvenation of the epidermis it also stimulates remodeling of the collagen within the skin. As healing takes place, scars begin to soften in their appearance, pore size is reduced, skin texture is improved and pigmentation starts to even out.
Treatments with this laser have no need for topical anesthesia, with patient reporting minimal discomfort during the procedure. The actual procedure is done in the office and can take from 10-30 minutes for a full face. Side effects are minimal with the most reported effect being redness for a few hours afterward. Most physicians recommend 3-6 treatments for the best results. Very little to no downtime is needed and normal activities can be resumed in less than 24 hours.
